The Canadian Forces’ Unit Commendation is a prestigious group award established in 1980 by the Chief of the Defence Staff to honor Canadian Armed Forces units for distinguished service beyond normal duty requirements. In late 1989, the insignia was upgraded from a simple pennant to a striking 12-sided (dodecagonal) gold-coloured medallion measuring 76 mm across, featuring superimposed tri-service symbols—an anchor, crossed swords, and flying eagle—topped by the Royal Crown and set on maple leaves. This design, with bilingual edge inscriptions “COMMENDATION” and “MENTION ÉLOGIEUSE,” symbolizes Canada’s unified military excellence.
The first production run of these medallions, totaling 300 pieces, was crafted in 1990 by Maple Leaf Stamping Ltd. in Scarborough, Ontario, marking the award’s enhanced physical form available from December that year. This skilled local manufacturer, now operating as The Premier Canadian Mint in Newmarket, Ontario, with over 65 years of expertise in custom medals and insignias, proudly produced these initial examples, contributing to Canada’s honours tradition through precision craftsmanship in military commemoratives.
