Moving ahead, The Premier Canadian Mint introducing one of the first items, the official RCMP Ceremonial Belt Buckle to the public and collectors for purchase here. World renowned Master Jeweller, Artist and Mint Master, Peter S. Vinczer, was commissioned by the RCMP, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, to completely redesign the RCMP Ceremonial Belt Buckle. Mr. Vinczer was featured twice in the Newmarket Era Banner about his work, here and here.
Previously, the buckle had a logo that did not accurately reflect the image of a buffalo it was meant to be. It looked more like a “goat” as RCMP procurement staff commented. The logo was a casting lacking detail, unlike the high detail of the minted logo that can be seen in the above photo. The back of the buckle had soldered wire that easily broke, frustrating RCMP officers who wore them during official ceremonies.
Mr. Vinczer, went to work creating a superb RCMP Ceremonial Belt Buckle. He travelled to Marineland where he observed live bison to establish the basis of the artwork for the centre of the logo. Every detail was taken into consideration. He would later create, in a plasticine, the head of a buffalo, modelled by hand. The outer decorative leaves on either side of the bison head were also carefully created with every detail in mind. Mr. Vinczer inherited this skill from his father, Nándor Vinczer, who was a highly skilled Hungarian craftsman creating works of art in plasticine, wood and canvas, recently honoured in a published book. Finishing touches were further carefully executed by Mr. Vinczer, completing the Crown on top and the lettering beneath the Buffalo.
His son, Attila Vinczer was hired to build the tooling that would create the buckle plate, the D rings and catch on the back of the buckle plate. After many months of research, design, and building dies, the new RCMP Ceremonial Belt Buckle was ready and submitted to the RCMP Quality Control for examination by Claude Schrybert. In the new design, the newest technology such as fusion welding was employed in assembling the buckle. No more toxic solder while all the parts were 24 carat gold plated to military standards.
The RCMP was extremely happy with the new design, which set a standard for the RCMP Ceremonial Belt Buckle and the RCMP logo.
